  • How many times can I apply for a Sabbatical Fellowship within an academic year?
    • There is no limit to how many applications you may submit in an academic year.
  • What can the Sabbatical Fellowship be used for? Do I literally need to take time off from teaching?
    • While we expect fellows to be on sabbatical, away from the classroom and focused on their research project during the award period, we are willing to consider fellowship terms on a case-by-case basis. Please note specific requests or arrangements you would like us to consider in your application.
  • I already have sabbatical leave that is funded by my institution; can the Sabbatical Fellowship funds be used for other purposes during my sabbatical than just buying out courses?
    • Yes, you can use sabbatical funds for activity other than buying out courses.
  • Is there an optimal length and formatting of a CV?
    • We do not have a recommendation for an optimal length and format of CV.
  • Is there a certain length you would like my answers to be on the application?
    • Once you click inside the text box under the question, a word count will appear. Please stay within this word count and put any additional information you would like to share in an attached word document.
  • What should I do if the application is not submitting?
    • Try a different browser, and make sure ad or pop-up blockers are disabled. If you still have problems, contact Funding@TheIHS.org.
  • When should I plan to hear a decision regarding my Sabbatical Fellowship application?
    • Decisions are announced four weeks after the application deadline.
  • Why was my application unsuccessful?
    • Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to provide individual feedback on applications.
  • Can I resubmit my application for next round of reviews?
    • Yes, you may reapply for the next round of reviews.
  • What does IHS look for in a successful application?
    • We have specific criteria depending on the program, but in general, we look at the eligibility of applicant, the eligibility of the proposed activity, and the expected or potential impact of that activity.
  • Who is eligible for the Sabbatical Fellowship?
    • You are eligible if you have a permanent, full-time faculty appointment at a four-year degree granting institution, with preference given to applicants from the U.S., U.K. and Canada.
  • Can I extend my earnings over two semesters?
    • Yes, you may extend your sabbatical over two semesters.
  • Will the funds be paid to me or my institution?
    • We can work with you to disburse the funds where you need.
