Hayek Fund for Scholars: Frequently Asked Questions

student researching in library
  • Can I still apply even though I am international?
    • Yes, international scholars are eligible to apply to Hayek Fund.
  • What can the Hayek Fund for Scholars be used for?
    • Hayek Fund can be used to offset particular expenses for academic research and career advancing activity. This includes, but is not limited to, travel for paper presentations, archival trips and job interviews, purchase of data sets, participation in seminars or peer reviews, research assistants, PhD application fees, and more.
  • Is my project likely to be funded by Hayek Fund?
    • Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to provide individual advice on applications.
  • Is there a certain length you would like my answers to be on the application?
    • Once you click inside the text box under the question, a word count will appear. Please stay within this word count and put whatever additional information you have in an attached word document.
  • What should I do if the application is not submitting?
    • Try a different browser, and make sure ad or pop-up blockers are disabled. If you still have problems, contact HayekFund@TheIHS.org
  • When will I hear back about my application?
    • You will receive a decision within four weeks of submitting your application.
  • Why was my application unsuccessful?
    • Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to provide individual feedback on applications.
  • Can I receive more than one Hayek Fund award in an academic year?
    • Yes, you are able to apply and receive more than one Hayek Fund award in an academic year.
  • Can I apply for funding to support the same project more than once?
    • Conference presentations: if we provide support for you to present a paper at a particular conference, you would not be eligible to receive funding to present that same paper at a different conference. However, you would be eligible to apply for presenting a different paper at a different conference, or repeating conference attendance with different paper presentation(s).

For most other purposes, we are willing to consider additional support for the same project you have already received funding. You are welcome to reach out to HayekFund@TheIHS.org if you have any questions.

We recognize that new and unexpected expenses may emerge in the process of engaging in a research project. Should you be the recipient of a Hayek Fund award for a particular project, and new expenses arise (such as the need for additional data sets, the assistance of an editor or research assistant, an archival trip, etc.), you may apply for an additional Hayek Fund grant for that project. However, a minimum of three (3) months must separate applications for supporting the same project.
  • What does an acceptable receipt look like?
    • A receipt needs to include payment date, method of payment, vendor, items/services received, and amount. If you are acquiring a hotel or flight receipt, often calling the hotel or airline/booking agency will allow you to get a receipt emailed to you. If you are unable to acquire one of these, a screenshot of your credit card/bank account that shows the same vendor and price as the booking confirmation and includes the date of payment works.
  • When will I receive my payment?
    • Upon submission of completed materials, you will receive payment within four to five weeks. Please reach out to HayekFund@TheIHS.org if you have not received your payment after five weeks.
  • Will the funds be paid to me or my university?
    •  We can work with you to disburse the funds where you need.
