Overview
Join the Institute for Humane Studies for a two-day, in-person graduate papers workshop on local politics, urban governance, and democratic decision-making, hosted in partnership with Dr. Bryant J. Moy (New York University). Held March 20–21 at New York University, this workshop offers PhD students the opportunity to present works in progress and receive detailed, constructive feedback from faculty and peers.
We welcome research examining how local governments operate, respond to constituents, and maintain legitimacy across diverse political and social environments. This includes work on urban public safety, policing, overlapping local institutions, inequality, informal governance, and the interactions between formal state actors and non-state or criminal organizations in both US and comparative contexts. Projects at any stage, from abstract to full paper draft, are encouraged.
Participants will strengthen their research, engage in substantive discussion, and connect with a community of scholars exploring the foundations and challenges of effective, accountable, and democratic local governance. IHS will provide all participants with a $200 honorarium and a stipend to offset lodging, transportation, and travel-related meal expenses. All meals during the workshop itself will be provided by IHS.
