Barbara A. McGraw, JD, PhD, is professor of social ethics, law, and public life, professor of politics, and founding director of the Center for Engaged Religious Pluralism and its Prison Religion Project at Saint Mary’s College of California. Her work centers on American identity and its moral and spiritual foundations, the role of religion in public life, and religious liberty. McGraw holds a PhD in religion and social ethics and JD from the University of Southern California. Among her many books, articles, and chapters on religion, law, and politics and on interfaith leadership, she is the author of Rediscovering America’s Sacred Ground: Public Religion and Pursuit of the Good in a Pluralistic America (2003) and “A Theological Interpretation of the Declaration of Independence,” in The Cambridge Companion to the Declaration of Independence (2026), and editor of the Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Religion and Politics in the US (2016).
