Overview
Join the Institute for Humane Studies for a two-day, in-person graduate papers workshop on “Democratic Backsliding,” hosted in partnership with Dr. Joe Wright (Pennsylvania State University). Held in Arlington, Virginia, on June 26–27, this workshop offers PhD students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to present paper drafts and receive detailed, constructive feedback from peers and faculty discussants.
We welcome research examining the processes, mechanisms, and consequences of democratic backsliding, including work on the political economy of democratic erosion, institutional weakening and executive aggrandizement, constraints on judicial and legislative independence, media capture, electoral manipulation, and the transformation of party systems.
Participants will deepen their research, engage in substantive discussions, and connect with a community of scholars investigating the logic, institutions, and consequences of democratic backsliding. IHS will provide all participants with a $200 honorarium and a stipend to offset lodging, transportation, and travel-related meal expenses. All meals during the workshop itself will be provided by IHS.
