Designing Politically Sustainable Immigration Policy: A Graduate Papers Workshop

Overview
Join the Institute for Humane Studies for an in-person graduate papers workshop on “Designing Politically Sustainable Immigration Policy,” hosted in partnership with Dr. Alexander Kustov (University of Notre Dame). Held at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, this workshop offers PhD students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to present paper drafts and receive detailed, constructive feedback from peers and faculty discussants
We welcome research examining the conditions under which immigration policy can be both substantively beneficial and politically durable, including work on how the public defines and evaluates “beneficial” immigration and a “controlled” border; the policy-design mechanisms—such as selectivity criteria, rights and welfare packages for immigrants, humanitarian program design, and credible enforcement—that shape public support for immigration policy; and the gaps and tensions between public opinion, political rhetoric, and actual policy outcomes.
Participants will deepen their research, engage in substantive discussions, and connect with a community of scholars studying the institutions, incentives, and social foundations that shape political and economic life. IHS will provide all participants with a $200 honorarium and a stipend to offset lodging, transportation, and travel-related meal expenses. All meals during the workshop itself will be provided by IHS.
