Walter Sinnott-Armstrong was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and attended the Hotchkiss School, Amherst College, and Yale University. He taught at Dartmouth College 1981–2009 and since then at Duke University, where he is Chauncey Stillman Distinguished Professor of Practical Ethics in the Department of Philosophy and the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University with secondary appointments in the law school and the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. He has published 8 books, 21 edited collections, and over 250 articles and chapters on a wide variety of issues. His current research focuses on moral artificial intelligence, political polarization, and moral psychology and brain science. He co-directs Summer Seminars in Neuroscience and Philosophy and co-teaches a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), Think Again: How to Reason and Argue, on the Coursera platform with over a million students registered.
