Humane Studies Fellowship: FAQ

Apply today for the Humane Studies Fellowship
  • Who is eligible for Humane Studies Fellowship?
    • To be eligible, you must be enrolled full time in a PhD program and have a research interest that contributes to the advancement of classical liberal scholarship. Qualifying fields of study include economics, political science, philosophy, law, history, sociology, and similar disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. We generally do not fund students studying the natural sciences, medicine, or engineering.
  • Is the application still open? When will it open again?
    • The Humane Studies Fellowship web page contains the most up to date information regarding application open and close dates. If you wish to be notified when the application opens, please sign up for our graduate student newsletter here.
  • If I received a fall award, can my money be disbursed in the summer?
    • Unfortunately, we are unable to move award periods from fall to summer.
  • When will I hear back about my application?
    • You will receive a decision by the stated announcement date on our HSF web page.
  • When were the previous round of awards announced?
    • Awards were announced on January 15, 2020. If you did not receive a notification, please check your spam folders, or email HSF@TheIHS.org.
  • If I am a recipient, can I serve as a teaching assistant/fellow during my award period?
    • The terms of this fellowship do not exclude you from serving as a teaching assistant or other fellow during your HSF award period.
  • Can I still apply to HSF if I am not in a PhD program?
    • If you are planning to enter a PhD program in the award period, then you are eligible to apply. If you are not planning to be in a PhD program during the award period, you are not eligible to apply.
  • Can I still apply if I am not a US citizen?
    • Yes, you may apply if you are not a US citizen.
  • Is there a certain length you would like my answers to be on the application?
    • Once you click inside the text box under the question, a word count will appear. Please stay within this word count and put whatever additional information you have in an attached word document.
  • What should I do if the application is not submitting?
    • Try a different browser, and make sure ad or pop-up blockers are disabled. If you still have problems, contact HSF@TheIHS.org
  • What is the acceptance rate for the Humane Studies Fellowship?
    • While we are unable to share acceptance rates; the Humane Studies Fellowship is a highly competitive with a large number of applicants.
  • Why did I not get the full amount I applied for?
    • The fellowship is highly competitive and our resources limited; as such we are unable to fulfill the requests of every impressive student who applies.
  • Can I receive feedback on my application?
    • Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to provide individual feedback on applications.
